Point Park University's Pittsburgh Playhouse is proud to present Breakthrough Sessions: Tomorrow's Music Today, a new concert series showcasing emerging and breakthrough artists while inviting audiences to discover original music the creative voices shaping what’s next.

Presented as part of the Pittsburgh Playhouse's expanding live music initiative, Breakthrough Sessions will transform the Highmark Theatre into an intimate venue where artists can share new work, tell the stories behind their music, and connect directly with audiences.

A co-founder of Mystery Music Monday, Nick has built a distinguished career as a touring and recording artist, performing in more than 100 cities across 43 states and Canada. Known for his heartfelt storytelling and authentic songwriting, he connects with audiences through intimate performances that blend compelling narratives with acoustic-driven music. Since forming in 2015, the pair has built a loyal following through their dynamic blend of heartfelt songwriting, infectious melodies, and engaging live performances. Following a two-year hiatus from the stage, SUREFIRE is excited to return to live performance and reconnect with audiences. Alongside guitarist and songwriting partner Kristian Habenicht, the band blends blues, rock, funk, and soul into a dynamic sound that draws inspiration from legendary artists like Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. A staple on WYEP's airwaves, Melinda and the Night Sky have shared the stage with renowned acts including the B.B. King Blues Band, Sue Foley, and Lez Zeppelin. Melinda is also the founder of Women Who Rock™, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing women's health research through the power of music and community.

The Impromptus

August 27, 2026 6:00 PM The Impromptus are a Kittanning, Pennsylvania-based acoustic trio featuring Brian Shaffer (vocals/cajon), Chris Choncek (vocals/acoustic guitar), and Jeffrey Towers (vocals/electric guitar). Blending acoustic instrumentation, tight three-part harmonies, and seasoned musicianship, the group creates a rich, energetic sound that is both intimate and engaging. Each member brings years of performance experience from bands throughout the region, with Shaffer and Towers also contributing extensive recording experience. Collectively, they have shared the stage with artists including The Clarks, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Monkees, and many others. Whether performing acoustic favorites or crowd-pleasing classics, The Impromptus deliver a polished show driven by experience, talent, and passion for live music.
