By William Shakespeare
★★★★★ ‘Ian McKellen reigns supreme in this triumphant production.’ (Daily Telegraph)
Captured live from London’s West End in 2018, see Ian McKellen’s ‘extraordinarily moving portrayal’ (Independent) of King Lear in cinemas.
Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.
Jonathan Munby directs this ‘nuanced and powerful’ (The Times) contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.
National Theatre Live brings the best of British theatre to cinema screens across the UK and around the world. With state-of-the-art filming techniques, tailored to every play, they showcase each performance as it happens, in all its glory. From close-ups that capture every flicker of emotion, to sweeping wide shots of the stage.
NT Live films their plays in front of a live theatre audience, but optimises everything for the big screen so it’s the next best thing to being there. The actors on stage deliver their performances as they normally would any other night. But to make sure audiences watching in cinema have the best seat in the house, they tailor the position of their cameras to capture each production and work closely with technical teams to make sure every element on stage such as lighting, hair and make-up look fantastic on the big screen.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! COVID PROTOCOLS.
Your health and safety is our priority. Our goal is to ensure you can comfortably resume enjoying cultural events once again!
Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse has instituted layers of defense against COVID-19 and the safety practices for our guests, students, staff, and artists – the latest of which is a vaccination and mask requirement.
Point Park University requires all students to be vaccinated. Additionally, a university-wide mask mandate is in place. In a recent survey, we learned that 96% of our audience are fully vaccinated and 97% are more comfortable returning to the Playhouse with a vaccine-only admittance policy. It’s fabulous to see our unity in working together to keep each other and our community safe.
The vaccine policy begins September 1 and will remain in effect through April 30, 2022. We will continually be monitoring this protocol along with federal, state, and local guidelines and keep you informed of any changes.
Vaccination and Masking Requirements
Guests ages 5 and older who are attending public performances at the Pittsburgh Playhouse must be fully vaccinated with the Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccine and must show proof of vaccination with their valid ticket at the time of entry. Fully vaccinated means that on the date of the performance you would have received your second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or a single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine at least 14 days prior. Proof of vaccination must come directly from the healthcare provider that performed the vaccination. Guests may display proof on a smartphone or present a physical copy. Use of a Digital Vaccination Passport App is also acceptable.
Point Park University students, who are required to be vaccinated, need only show a valid student I.D. for entry.
For guests who are not vaccinated, they must provide one of the following instead of evidence of vaccination:
Negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours of the performance start time, or negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time.
Together with the proof of vaccination, all guests 18 years or older must also present a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. Guests younger than 18 may use a government-issued photo ID or school photo ID. Guests under 5 must be tested and accompanied by an adult who meets the above requirements.
Entry will be denied for guests who do not provide the documentation as required above.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Stay safe and be well.
