Charles Dickens final unfinished novel inspired Rupert Holmes to write this hilarious, lighthearted whodunit of a musical. Singer-songwriter Holmes recorded the Billboard No. 1 Hit, Escape (The Pina Colada Song) before turning to musicals. That should give audiences an idea of the fun tone of the musical, which starkly contrasts a more ominous style in the novel. Drood is presented as a show-within-a-show, where the Music Hall Royale—a wonderfully crazy Victorian theatre company—puts on Dickens' novel. Dickens unfinished work is finished with one of multiple endings decided by an audience vote. A must-see for theatre-goers seeking an amusing, family friendly production.
