"The way that Point Park is approaching the virtual season creates an opportunity to think outside the box and gives audiences a new way of experiencing storytelling."
Rose Egan, Junior Theatre Production: Design Major, is excited to take the helm as Lead Production Designer for the first virtual theatre production this fall, Water By The Spoonful.
By Quiara Alegria Hudes and directed by Christie Vela, Water By The Spoonful is a stunning digital presentation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Somewhere in a chat room, the boundaries of family and community are stretched across continents and cyberspace as birth families splinter and online families collide.
Rose says, "It's exciting to design my first full show and collaborate with a talented team of people. The unique challenge about this production is designing it while being remote. I had to communicate to my team with digital renderings to describe the world I wanted to create; along with keeping in touch through emails and Zoom meetings."
However, Rose's Point Park education and training prepared her well for this unique experience. "Taking various production courses at Point Park has prepared me for this work by developing skills in drafting, 3D renderings, and communication with other professionals," she shared.
Although COVID-19 has created significant challenges, the team at Point Park University's Pittsburgh Playhouse reframed those challenges and turned them into creative opportunities. Rose reflected, "This process was very inspiring because even with the limitations due to COVID, you can still design and create art while being at your computer desk."
In terms of her inspiration for the design, she said, "Water By The Spoonful deals with the themes of disconnection and connection within an ever-changing world. That theme is what inspired my vision for the show. Audiences can expect to see a show that is relevant to our current time."
Below is an inside peek at what Rose has been working on. Water By The Spoonful runs Nov. 18 - 22. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased here.
