Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse recently announced the launch of its inaugural summer music festival, Inside/Outside. The festival features the very best in live jazz, classical and Baroque era music on Forbes Avenue this summer. Performances will take place on the Playhouse Plaza every Thursday and Friday beginning June 24 through July 30 from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Inside/Outside is presented in partnership with MCG Jazz, Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, Chatham Baroque, and Pioneer Records. Tickets are $10, include a free drink, and are available at the Pittsburgh Playhouse Box Office HERE or by calling 412.392.8000.

The programming lineup includes:

 June 24: MCG Jazz presents Pittsburgh Piano Celebration + Pittsburgh Playhouse 2021-2022 Season Announcement Party
Pittsburgh Piano Celebration will feature three pianists led by Pittsburgh Jazz Legend Max Leake with Steve Rudolph from Harrisburg as well as Antonio Croes. The full ensemble will include Anton DeFade on bass and James Johnson III on drums. Music will range from piano trio features to an all-out three piano extravaganza showcasing the Steinway piano on loan from MCG Jazz that was used by Johnny Costa on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

June 25: Chatham Baroque presents Españoleta: Dances from Baroque Spain and the New World with Andrew Fouts (baroque violin), Patricia Halverson (viola da gamba), and Scott Pauley (theorbo, baroque guitar), joined by virtuoso percussionist and long-time collaborator, Danny Mallon.

July 1: MCG Jazz presents Pittsburgh Jazz Drum Circle
This program will feature four of Pittsburgh’s finest drummers representing multiple generations including: George Heid III, Thomas Wendt, James Johnson III, and Pittsburgh Jazz Legend Roger Humphries. They will explore the tradition of jazz drumming in various combinations playing music associated with iconic Pittsburgh jazz drummers such as Art Blakey and Kenny Clarke. The full ensemble will include Joe Seman on saxophone, Paul Thompson on bass, and Max Leake on piano.

July 2: Chatham Baroque presents Suonare: The Italian Trio Sonata with Andrew Fouts (baroque violin), Patricia Halverson (viola da gamba), Scott Pauley (theorbo, baroque guitar), and special guest Paul Miller (violin, viola d’amore).

July 8: MCG Jazz presents the DeFade Family’s Pittsburgh Album Release Party
The DeFade family is synonymous with Jazz in Pittsburgh and three generations of DeFades will take the stage to celebrate the release of their new CD. With Ray DeFade Sr. and Eric DeFade on saxophones, Ray DeFade Jr. on drums, and Anton DeFade on bass, the full ensemble will include six additional horn players to showcase the big band arrangements of Ray DeFade Sr.

July 9: Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh presents the String Quintet with Anne Moskal (violin 1), Rochelle Agnew (violin 2), Jennifer Gerhard Mangone (viola), Kathy Melucci (cello), and Jeff Mangone (bass).

July 15: MCG Jazz presents Guitars for Pittsburgh
Dan Wilson is a familiar name in Pittsburgh and one of the top guitarists touring today. We are fortunate to be able to host his working band from New York City featuring Glenn Zaleski on piano and Marco Panascia on bass, along with Pittsburgh’s own James Johnson III on drums. Pittsburgh resident guitar masters Mark Strickland and John Shannon will join the show.

July 16: Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh presents the Woodwind Quintet with Alyssa Pysola (flute), Ian Woodworth (oboe), Mary Beth Malek (clarinet), Linda Fisher (bassoon), and Kyle Morelock (french horn).

July 22: MCG Jazz presents Allan Harris Sings Pittsburgh
We welcome home Allan Harris with his touring band featuring Arcoiris Sandoval on piano, Marty Kenney on bass, Norman Edwards on drums, and Irwin Hall on saxophone. A special guest appearance from the Top 10 charting vocalist Nicole Henry will add to the celebration.

July 23: Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh presents the String Trio “Trio Simone” with Anne Moskal (violin), Jennifer Gerhard Mangone (viola), and Jeff Mangone (bass).

July 29: MCG Jazz presents the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra Plays Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh’s own 17-piece jazz orchestra is comprised of many of the finest musicians in the region and a perfect way to close the series with the power of a big band. PJO will celebrate many of the great artists that are from Pittsburgh including Ahmad Jamal, Stanley Turrentine, Billy Strayhorn, and Mary Lou Williams.

July 30: Pioneer Records presents Elias Khouri

Inside/Outside is sponsored by MCG Jazz, Chatham Baroque, Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, Downtown Sounds, WZUM Jazz Pittsburgh, and EVEN Hotel Pittsburgh.

“It is going to be delightful to safely gather at the Pittsburgh Playhouse this summer to enjoy music brought to us by some of Pittsburgh’s most treasured performing artists,” said Drew Martorella, Managing Director.
