Danny Herman - Broadway veteran, director and choreographer

“I fully accepted the reality,” Herman said. “It’s a soul piece about how to keep on going and finding joy in immediate circumstances.”

It’s interesting to think about how an artist choreographs a new piece in the middle of a global pandemic. But Danny Herman, director and choreographer, used the pandemic as the inspiration for his new work, #thebeatgoeson…, co-choreographed by Grace LeMieux.

Herman recalls he was asked to choreograph for the first dance show of the Fall 2020 season right as the pandemic kicked in. He reflected, “My first thought was how am I going to do this on the internet?” Herman said. “Then I realized, no matter what was going to happen, I was going to present it. Nothing can stop this. There’s no quitting; we have to function during this time.”

#thebeatgoeson… is a 12-minute dynamic tap piece that’s meant to be a salute to this particular time. He recounted that tap dance was in fact born on slave plantations, and whether then or now, it represents that no matter what, nothing can stop people from dancing. He described Pittsburgh as one of the top cities for tap dance nationwide.

“I fully accepted the reality,” Herman said. “It’s a soul piece about how to keep on going and finding joy in immediate circumstances.”

Herman said directing during a pandemic has been interesting with masks and protocols. However, he said the students have been amazing. “I’ve been a director/choreographer since the early 80s because of Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse. It feels full circle, great and really comfortable to be here.”

ChoreoLab 1 unites Point Park Conservatory dance students and faculty as they collaborate in the choreographic process to create incredible works that showcase the creative and innovative brilliance of seasoned professionals and budding young artists. In addition to Danny Herman, we’re also proud to present the work of Crystal Frazier, Dan Karasik, Pearlann Porter and Shana Simmons.

ChoreoLab 1 runs from Oct. 28 - Nov 1. Tickets are available here.
